Description

ADJOINS SOUTH EAST END OF THE MITRE INN. FORMERLY A PAIR OF COTTAGES (B1).
Grade II. House. Probably C15 altered C17 and C19. Timber-framed with C20 roughcast cement render over earlier lime render to front, thatch roof and brick ridge and front lateral stack. 3-bay hall house originally consisting of 2-bay open hall with 2-storey service bay. Hall sub-divided horizontally early C17, and stone stack inserted to give a 2-unit through passage plan. 2-storey, 3-window range. C19 six-panel door to left of centre with glazed top panels and straight hood on shaped brackets. A 3-light C20 casement window to ground floor right and 8-pane sash window to ground floor left, both with narrow straight hoods on small shaped brackets. Rear elevation has close studding to first floor and a single-storey extension to rear left and rear right. INTERIOR: house has full cruck trusses either end and to left of centre, all closed trusses with collars and saddles bearing ridge piece. Truss to right of centre formerly to middle of open hall is smoke-blackened and has curved chamfered braces to tie beam, which has 2 chamfers divided by channel. King strut to collar flanked by diagonal struts, similar arrangement above collar with thin King strut and saddle to principals bearing ridge piece. 2 tiers of wind-braced purlins, with chamfers, the lower tier trenched. Open fireplace has stop-chamfered bressumer. Stop-chamfered spine beam to main ground floor room with some original stop-chamfered joists. Corner fireplace to ground-floor room to left of entrance passage. Winder stair to 1st floor. Part of house has been a butcher's shop and was formerly joined to a cottage to right, demolished C20 for road-widening. Cottage formed L-plan with surviving house and was probably C17 (B2).
