Description

Grade II. House, milliner's shop and haberdashery, later petrol station and workshop, now offices. Probably mid-C18, altered C19 and C20. Rendered over brick, with C20 plain-tile roof and brick end stacks. Double-depth plan. 3-storey, 5-window range. C19 double shop front to left with round arch-headed divisions and fluted Doric columns either end, supporting fascia with dentilled cornice. Two 12-pane sash windows to ground floor right with moulded rendered surrounds. Similar windows to 1st and 2nd floors. Plinth, rusticated quoins, storey bands, and plain stone-coped parapet. Right side elevation facing Elm Street has door with overlight, panelled reveals, and moulded wood surround with cornice hood.
INTERIOR: ground floor opened out C19 with new stair preceded by arcaded screen of 3 elliptical arch-headed openings with key blocks, that to centre much wider than those either side. Top-lit corkscrew spiral stair to 1st-floor gallery with ramped and wreathed mahogany handrail and cut tread ends; coved ceiling with panel mouldings and domed skylight. Back wall of staircase hall has large central mirror framed by what is probably the original front door surround with Corinthian half-columns supporting full entablature. Formerly a milliner's shop and haberdashery in C19, then, until 1986, a petrol station and bicycle repair shop - 'Marriotts'.
