Description

Grade II. Pair of cottages. Early C18, altered C19 and C20. Red brick in Flemish bond with stucco render to front, unpainted to No.10, plain-tile roofs, brick lateral stacks. One-unit plans. 2 storeys and attic; 2-window range. 6-panel, part-glazed door to far left (No.10), 6-panel door to right of centre (No.9) with overlight and panelled reveals, both with small straight hoods on shaped brackets. Canted bay windows, that to right with C19 horned sash windows, that to left with 24-pane sash to front, 12-pane sashes to sides. Tripartite sash to 1st floor left with rendered rusticated surround and key block. Cellar window to No.10 to base of bay window, 1st-floor storey band, rusticated quoins to either end of front of No.10 and coped parapets and gables. Pediment gable to No.10 has lunette window to rear, a distinctive feature which it shares with demolished Red Buildings of 1725, built at the expense of Earl Cobham following a fire in the town. INTERIOR: stop-chamfered spine beams, cellar to No.10, common rafter roofs with prominent carpenter's marks in the form of Roman numerals, 1 tier of clasped purlins, wind braced to front bay. Nos 9 & 10 form part of a group of 3 similar cottages with No.8 [CASS 1179100000] probably built at the same time as the demolished Red Buildings built 1725, following a fire in the town.
