Description

Grade II. House. Early C17, altered and extended to rear early C18 and early C20. Coursed rubble stone to ground floor; moulded first floor string course; roughcast upper storey with moulded wooden modillion cornice and rendered parapet. Old tile roof, External chimney to left has stone stack with 2 square shafts of thin brick set diagonally, the shafts rebuilt. C17 central chimney has pilasters to 3 sides and later brick chimney to right. 2 storeys and cellar, 4 main bays. Ground floor left bays have early C20 3-light wooden casements with transoms. 5 similar windows to first floor. 2 bays to ground floor right each have 2 early C18 3-pane sashes in architrave frames. Cellar window in third bay, small rectangular inglenook window in stone surround, partly chamfered, to centre. Good wide central door is 6-panelled with architrave frame and rectangular fanlight. Flat wooden cornice hood above has panelled soffit and elaborately carved scroll brackets. Ornamental carved wooden panel with cherubs has been set above door, also a later sundial. Extensions parallel to rear are gabled and have irregular leaded cross windows, gabled porch with made-up wooden doorcase, and projecting side wings. Interior: Room to ground floor left has enrly C18 bolection panelling and 2-panelled doors. Room to left of centre has large fireplace with moulded stone jambs and moulded 4-centred wooden lintel. Inner side walls of fireplace have chamfered depressed arches of dressed stone, the left a niche, the right with window. Altered C18 staircase with fine turned balusters, moulded handrail and bulbous baluster newelposts. Chamfered and stop-chamfered spine beams. RCHM II p. 328 -9 Mon. 17 (B1).
