Description

Grade II. House. C16, altered early - mid C19 and later. Whitewashed render, probably over timber frame, with irregular plinth. C20 tiled roof, ornamental bargeboards, rendered chimney with cornice top and arched cowl between right bays, small brick chimney to right. 2 storeys cellar and attic, the first floor jettied to front and left side on C19 brackets, the front jetty having a moulded plaster cornice with pointed arch motifs. 3 bays. Ground floor has C19 barred bow windows with wooden cornice tops, that to left larger with 7 x 4 leaded panes and dentil cornice. 3-light wooden casements with C20 glazing to first floor. C20 door between left bays. Small extension to right with hipped slate roof. Right gable above has small 2-light leaded casement to attic. Left gable has C20 leaded cross casements and cellar opening with metal grille. Early C20 range at right-angles to rear. Interior: central room has finely moulded cross beams. Large open fireplace has finely carved wooden lintel, probably re-used, in the form of a very shallow 4-centred arch with carved spandrels, and frieze ornamented with stars, rosettes and arrows in cusped panels. Carved stone crest above has similar motifs and bishop's mitre on a jousting shield. Curved wind-braces in roof. Early C19 corner fireplace in left room. RCHM II p. 327 Mon.10 (B1).
