Description

Grade II. House and shop. C16, altered C17 and later. Timber frame with brick infill, the front rendered. Old tile roof, brick chimneys to centre and right. 2 storeys, 4 irregular bays, the left gabled to street and slightly projecting. Jettied first floor to centre bays. First floor has 3-light wooden casements. Ground floor has C20 shop front in left bay, canted bay windows to centre bays, and later 3-light barred wooden casement to right. Central 4-panelled door in architrave frame. Interior: wide bay to right of centre has moulded cross beams, stop-chamfered joists, and inserted fireplace. Main tie beam in room above is cambered and chamfered. Chamfered main posts with heavy jowls. RCHM II p. 326-7, Mon.9 (B1).
The Cock Inn was the venue of many events in the village's history, including the determination of the Inclosure in 1771. The inn was delicensed in 1917, when it was bought by Fred Parrott and used as a butcher's shop (B4).
