Description

Grade II. Home for the Elderly, formerly the Vicarage. 1871-3 by George Devey. Red brick with diaper patterns in blue brick, irregular plinth of sarsen stone. Tiled roof, picturesque composition with many gables moulded brick eaves. 2 storeys and attic, lst floor band. Entrance on N. front, lean-to porch in recess with 2-light casement to LH, 3-light above. Gable to RH has large projecting chimney stack with offsets and 2 diagonal shafts. Gable to LH has canted oriel to 1st floor, 2-light casements to ground floor and attic. Lower service wing to LH, altered. Garden (W) elevation has narrow gable to LH with dentil verge small panel in tympanum, 4-light window with moulded head to 1st floor, 4-light transomed window to ground floor. Large chimney stack in centre, now taken down to eaves level, square bay to RH with french window (B1).
New vicarage designed by George Devey for Revd Albert Smith and built in 1871-3. Devey's cashbook records payments of £120 in October 1871, £50 in December 1871, £25 in March 1872, £25 in July 1872, £20 in December 1872 and £60 in July 1873. The vicarage is a rather unsympathetic building in harsh red brick in an attenuated Gothic style and has been much altered. There are 2 photographs in RIBA's Devey Collection (B2).
Winterton House, built for the Rev Albert Smith as the vicarage by Devey in 1873-7. Elizabethan-style in diapered brick with Devey's typical meandering stone base courses. It is almost swamped by 1950s extensions (B3).
