Description

Grade II. House. Late C18 cottage with former post office, now house, dated 1847 to right. Whitewashed render. Cottage: thatched roof with brick stack to right; 2 storeys, 2 bays; paired wooden casement to right, similar smaller casements to first floor; blocked door to left; single storey extension with slate roof and 3-light barred casement to left. Post Office: slate roof, central brick stack; 2 storeys, 3 bays; large barred windows with cambered heads to ground floor, 3-light Cl9 casements to first floor; windows in right-hand bay altered or renewed; double board doors between left-hand bays (B1).
Appears to have been the post office from 1920s to 1950s (B2).
This complex building was the post office at the time of the 1910 Vauluation Survey (in January 1914) described as part brick and slate (dated 1847) and part brick and thatch. There was also a disused bakehouse, at the left hand end. Charles Hall was tenant and E. Harper the owner. The 1911 directory shows Mrs Mary Elizabeth Hall as shopkeeper and Post Office. The owner told us it was once a haberdashery shop. [Photo] (B3).
