Description

Grade II. Pair of cottages, once 3. C17-C18, altered. Render over timber frame, corrugated iron roof over thatch, brick stacks to left gable and right of centre. 1½ storeys, 3 bays. Left-hand cottage of 2 bays has paired casements to ground floor left and first floor, 3-light casement to lower right, and central C2O door. Right-hand cottage has 3-light casement to ground floor, 2 paired casements to first floor, and C20 battlemented brick extension to right with entry (B1).
Dove Cottage is on the left and Laburnum Cottage on the right. Both are obviously timber framed and thatched and evidently restored, since the list description describes them as a pair with render over the timber frame and a corrugated iron roof over the thatch. Surely a 17th century date seems more likely than 18th century. In the 1910 Valuation Survey they were grouped together with the brick house on the right, The Laurels, then called The Bench and owned by Margaret Holt. The 1911 directory lists a Mrs M Holt at The Firs. [Photo] (B2).
