Description

Township in Middle Ages. In list of Bucks DMVs (B7).
APs show probable house platforms centred at SP8100 2205 (B8).
Village was centred at SP816 220 (B9).
Earthworks cover field to N of Creslow Manor, numerous but not forming a regular pattern. Ground is rough & overgrown. Some tractor damage (B2).
Ranulf also holds Creslow. It answers for 5 hides. Land for 6 ploughs; in lordship 4. 6 villagers with 1 smallholder have 2 ploughs. 5 slaves; meadow for 5 ploughs. Total value 100s; when acquired £4; before 1066 £6. Wulfwen, a woman, held this manor before 1066; she could sell (B10).

A medieval deserted settlement is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located across several fields immediately SW and N of Manor Farm and centred respectively at SP 81049 21642 and SP 81004 22069, the settlement comprises a series of interconnected ditches that may represent boundaries, trackways, hollow ways and ponds, as well as a probable moat. The ditches and scarp slopes bound and define a scatter of small (mostly) irregularly shaped earthwork platforms. Many of the ditches in the southern field are flanked by earthworks banks and appear to be set out in a more linear, rectilinear and organised pattern. Other features recorded are hollows, pits and mounds, whose function is uncertain. In the northern field the ditches and platforms abut 4 small blocks of ridge and furrow cultivation. On aerial photographs taken in 2022 and recent remote sensing data, the settlement earthworks remain visible (13-18).
