Description

Grade II. Farmhouse. Circa 1800. Coursed rubble stone, steeply pitched tiled roof with stone coped gables, moulded kneelers and end stacks. 2 storeys and attic, band course at first floor level. 4 bays. Tripartite sashes to ground floor outer bays, door with hood in second bay from left, sash window to right. First floor has blank windows with one sash over door. 3 gabled dormers with leaded lights (B1).
The house is clearly a major house of the district, built in the 17th century. There seems little doubt that the SW room was the living kitchen, a stair hall with cross passage at the kitchen end in the centre, and a parlour at the farther end. The present rear kitchen wing is also of the 17th century and is probably contemporary, serving as a bake or brewhouse. The three part plan with narrow central stair bay suggests that the date of building is late in the century. The fine stair, with elongated urn balusters, is typical of the 1680-1720 period, which suggests a date for the whole building with the possible exception of the cellars (B2).
