Description
Grade II. Bridge over River Ouse. Early-mid C18. Brick, English bond. 4 semi- circular brick voussoir arches. Broader pointed cut-water to NW end. Plain brick parapets with stone copings (B1).
This fine red brick bridge has four identical three-layer brick voussoir arches, each with a span of 3m. These sit on three brick piers with sharp pointed cutwayers. The piers sit on more recent concrete reinforcement at the level of the riverbed. The brickwork continues upwards past the string course to form parapets with stone coping. The bridge has the reinforcing tie rods and retaining plates typical of the era. The deck/roadway is a narrow 4.5m allowing only single lane traffic. There are two slightly smaller flood arches to the south of the main bridge also constructed in red brick, and a field stone causeway wall leads up to the bridge. Photos (B2).
