Description
Grade II. Medieval, C17 and C18. Two storeys rubble stone, thatch. Two ledged doors and three 3-light casements to ground floor and three 3-light upper casements, the centre one carried into thatch. Right hand gable cemented above. One storey lean-to shed with cruck frame visible above. Rear wall rendered, probably over timber-framing. Small rear wing of stone and witchert. Interior has 3 cruck trusses rising to apex with yokes supporting ridge purlin. Large stack at west end (B1).
3 cruck trusses with curved blades, held by a saddle or yoke, holding only a ridge piece. Source: Roger Evans, Buckinghamshire CC (B2).
Building survey and documentary research suggest the building was originally two separate cruck houses, amalgamated by infilling between to form the current three-bay structure. The house was in two ownerships from at least 1709-about 1930. Bay 1 is suggested to be the floored chamber-end of a house formerly extending to the east, with bay 2 representing the later infill, and bay 3 the hall bay of a house formerly extending to the west; access to the roof structure would be needed to confirm this. Two cruck trusses are visible, T2 at the west end of bay 1 is a cruck with collar and severed tiebeam and is weathered on one side, T3 between bays 2 and 3 is more substantial, with a collar and tiebeam higher than T2 and heavily weathered on one side; truss T4 at the west end of the building appears to be a straight post, tiebeam and rafter truss rather than having a cruck blade. See report for detail (B3).
