Description

Grade II. Medieval and C18; one storey and attic, rubble stone with brick dressings. Modern tile roof replacing thatch. Two modern casements and central door with segmental canopy. Two gabled dormers. Contains cruck truss; possibly originally a barn. (Records of Bucks XVIII, pt 2, 1967)(B1).
Felling date of 1457 obtained by dendrochronological dating from cruck (B2).

Historic building recording carried out in February 1989 suggests that the remaining cruck truss formed the gable end of one bay of a cruck-framed building. The crucks were reportedly of 'type C', with a saddle apex but the upper parts, including the collar, purlins, wind braces and rafters were removed during re-roofing works shortly before the historic building recording. Dendro-dating gave a felling date range of 1436-1468 for the truss. In the late 18th or early 19th century the SE bay was extended and the walls rebuilt in stone, the NW part of the house was heightened and re-fronted in brick. The building can be traced as far back as 1669 but seems to have been a subsiduary building to the main freeholding. See report for detail (B4).
