Description

Grade II. Barn. C17. Rubble stone, tiled roof with ornamental bands of fishscale tiles. Four bays, off-centre waggon entry. Collar and tie beam trusses on corbelled wall posts and braces, queen struts, double purlins and ridge beam on plated yoke (B1).
A 17th century limestone and tiled barn standing on the north-east side of a 19th century farmyard complex close to the site of the former Manor. Built as five bays it is now reduced to four. A 17th century, timber-framed barn on or near the cite was dismantled and the roof modified to fit onto a stone walled barn, probably in the 18th century. Subsequently the length was reduced by one bay. The size of the timbers, the chamfer decoration on the tie beams and braces, and the general quality of the carpentry all suggest that the barn had a high status owner. The possibilities, neither of which can be proven from the available evidnce, are that it was either associated with the early manor house sited to the west of the church or that it was atithe barn for the rectory, which stood beside the church in the 17th century (B2).
