Description
Grade II. Former pair of cottages, now one. C17-C18. Whitewashed roughcast. Thatch roof swept down and half-hipped over right-hand bay. Central brick stack. One-and-a-half storeys. Each cottage double fronted with partly blocked central board door, no window to upper right-hand bay. Various barred windows to ground floor with horizontal sliding sash to left. Three paired barred casements in thatch (B1).
The building is a three bay timber framed building of the earlier 17th century, with a central living hall, an unheated parlour at the W end, and a largeservice bay at the E end. The roof has been remodelled, probably in the late 17th century, with two tiers of purlins reduced to one, possibly to improve accommodation without the inconvenience of a lower collar. Dating is typologically based on the ogee chamfer stops to the hall, the curved wind and corner braces, and the overall approach to the construction. The village Post Office once occupied the E bay, and was closed in 1966 (B2).
