Description
Grade II. House. Dated HJIJ 1793. Whitewashed rubble stone, timber lintels to openings, slate roof. Main block of two widely spaced bays with another bay at slight angle to right. Stacks flanking main block. Three storeys. C20 barred wooden casements, three light to left- hand bay, two light to remainder. Panelled door, top-lit, between left-hand bays, board door to right. Listed for group value (B1).
Cottage Farm as it stands is not a 17th century structure, but the plan form and some detail, such as the large fireplace and heavy door frame adjacent suggest that it is based on a building of 17th century date. Thi sdate may be that of the end and gable stone wall. The building, or at least a building on this site, was an inn in the 17th century, the Cock. It was renamed The Chequers and later, colloquially, the Drum and Monkey. It closed as a public house in 1879 (B2).
