ST ACHEUL TYPE HANDAXE, VOLCANIC ROCK. FINE-GRAINED MATRIX OF ALTERED FELDSPATHIC MATERIAL. UNROLLED. POINT BROKEN TRANSVERSELY. SOURCE OF MATERIAL UNKNOWN. SUBMITTED TO BM (B1-2).
ALMOST CERTAINLY A COLLECTOR'S THROW-OUT (B3).
MR V SUTTON CONFIRMS GARDEN BELONGED TO BUILDER(?) (B4).
An Acheulian handaxe found in the rock garden of a house in Rectory Avenue, High Wycombe, (SU 872 932) was submitted to the British Museum for examination, by the finder, Miss Dessin. The implement was found to be of volcanic rock, of foreign origin, while the rest of the rockery was of local stone. Although the source of the raw material, the place of its manufacture and its conveyance to High Wycombe are equally mysterious, there can be little hesitation in calling it a Palaeolithic handaxe (B1).
No further information; Miss Dessin cannot be traced. (B5)
