Description

Grade II. Pair of cottages. Dated H de R 1876 on plaque, altered. Red brick, part whitewashed, with whitewashed roughcast and coloured half-timbering to first floor of gabled bays. Hipped tile roof with some fishscale patterning, large central brick chimney with pilasters. 2 storeys, 2 bays. Gabled bay to right has canted bay window to ground floor and jettied first floor with 3-light wooden casement. Whitewashed date plaque with flanking herringbone panels below upper window. Narrow porch to right has single light to front and entry to side. Left bay has paired eaves-breaking casements to first floor, and altered French doors below. Symmetrical to Nos 9 and 10, similar to Nos 4 and 5. Part of a group of picturesque estate cottages built for Hannah de Rothschild in style influenced by work of George Devey at Ascott (B1).
