Description
Grade II. House. Said to have been built in 1912 by Detmar Blow. Thin, hand-made brick imported from Holland, some greensand rubble to plinth of right bay. Moulded brick eaves and dressings, old tile hipped roofs, symmetrical brick chimneys. Built in the manner of a late C17 house on an H plan. 2 storeys and attic, basement to right wing. 5 bays. Wide outer bays project and have central panels with 3-pane sashed in raised brick surrounds with roll mouldings to inner edges. Upper windows have small stone balconies with plain iron railings, and moulded brick pediments on brackets above. Recessed central section has 3-pane sashed in similar surrounds flanking 6 panelled door with rectangular fanlight. Doorway also has moulded brick surround, segmental pediment on console brackets, and blind oval panel above. 2 hipped dormers with barred wooden casements. Rear originally had central portico with round and thermal windows above, but has been altered with the addition of a large bay window. Interior has staircase in matching style (B1).
Sales particulars from 1988 suggest that the house was built for a Cambridge classics scholar to provide an appropriate setting for his extensive library (B2).
