Description
Grade II. House. C16, altered C17 with C19 addition. Timber-framed with colourwashed infill to north, and to street gable. Remainder coursed-rubble clad. North wing witchert, colourwashed and rendered, on rubble plinth, forming letter L-plan house. Thatch roofs, half hipped to street gable and with old tile valley between wings. 3 bays, one storey plus attic. North wing of one bay and 2 storeys. 3-light casement to street front and gable above leans outwards. North elevation has C16 diamond mullion window and inserted 3-light ovolo moulded mullioned window to ground floor. Door in angle. Casements to other elevations, some modern. Stack between east bays and to north gable. Flat roofed east addition. East bay has some exposed timber-framing. Interior: Centre bay originally open to roof as hall and smoke blackening on roof timbers. Inglenook fireplace and chamfered and stopped spine beam and joists inserted in early C17. Parlour bay fronting road has on east wall late C16 wall painting of strapwork, honeysuckle friezes and black letter texts, a rare survival in a house of this size. Curved purlin braces in roof. A good example of a small late medieval hall house. RCHM.I.182.MON.29 (B1).
