Description

Grade II. House. Early C18, extended early C19. Original house is of ashlar with plinth, first floor band course, moulded eaves cornice and keyblocks over windows. Old tile roof, flanking rendered chimneys. Small wing projecting to rear has C16 brick, possibly from Salden house. Pebbledash extensions with brick eaves and tiled roofs. Original block of 2 storeys and attic, 5 bays. Tall narrow 2-pane sash windows with thick glazing bars. 2 gabled dormers with paired wooden casements. Central panelled door with marginally glazed fanlight and wooden doorcase of Doric pilasters, plain frieze and small moulded cornice One room with early C18 panelling inside, late C18-early C19 extension of one bay to left has moulded and toothed eaves, similar dormer and 4-pane sashes. Further early C19 extension to left with dentilled eaves has 2 storeys, 3 bays. 4-pane sashes with segmental heads, central window of first floor blind. Half-glazed door with segmental headed fanlight in right bay (B1).
During the construction of a new extension, a watching brief was carried out. The building formerly occupying the site had been demolished and the watching brief began at the start of ground reduction works. Material was noted as having been redeposited possibly from the demolition of nearby pigsties. Wall foundations were observed and some were interpreted as relating to the 19th century buildings. Another was wider and more solidly constructed of roughly hewn stone blocks and was believed to form an earlier 16-17th century wall. An assemblage of worked stone blocks was aslo collected duirng the soil stripping (B2).
