Description

Dimensions - Length 110m, Width 75m.
Plan Form - Subrectangular.
Part of Scheduled Ancient Monument. Waterfilled homestead moat. Arms 10-16m wide. Access to island by modern brick bridge, SW side. Dovecote within S corner, fishpond/s to N (B12).
Moat cleared, shrubs etc removed from island, spoil from moat spread over interior, 1985 (Photos, filed)(B11 ).

Tithe-barn, dovecote and stirrup-shaped moat at Church Farm. The mid-16th c barn is a good example of its kind and the late 17th c dovecote (within its moat) is square and brick-built (B3).
The moat formerly contained the old Rectory and may date from the rectorship of John de Crachale (or Crachely) c 1236 (B2)

A D-shaped waterfilled homestead moat at Church Farm measures overall 110.0m E-W by 75.0m transversely. The arms are 10.0 to 16.0m in width. Access to the island is by a modern brick bridge on the SW side. Within the S corner at SP 97231930 is a late 17th c rectangular brick-built dovecote with red tile roof, and doorway in the W side. See illustration card. The walls, within, are covered with brick-builtnesting holes. The building is in fair condition and is in use as a store room. N of the moat are two sub-rectangular fishponds. The larger, at SP 97221941, is 56.0m long and 20.0m wide, the smaller adjoining the NE corner, is 26.0m long and 8.0m wide. Both are
waterfilled but marshy. S of the moat, at SP 97191926, is a tithe barn, 49.0m in length, and of eight bays. It is a half-timber construction with red-brick infilling, upon a brick base, and has a red tile roof. In good condition. Published 25" survey revised. Nearby Church farmhouse is of early 19th c date (B23).
