Description

William Fitz-John held lands and tenements in Edlesborough in 1294 (B1).
MANOR FARM: OLD HOUSE PULLED DOWN 1853 STOOD ON A MOATED SITE (B2).
MOAT ONCE ENCLOSED MANOR HOUSE OF THE FITZ JOHNS (B3).
DOUBLE HOMESTEAD MOAT (B4).

Moat, once enclosing the manor house of the Fitz-Johns. (Manor Farm moat is shown on Gurney's map (q v) as 'Kings Farm anciently Fitz-John's manor' although OS shows Kings Farm immediately to the North. The date of the map is not given) (B3).
The old building which stood within the moat was pulled down in 1853 (B2).
The remains of a homestead moat measuring overall 96.0m NW-SE by 0.0m transversely. Only the N,W and most of the S arms survive, 8.0m to 12.0m wide, and still waterfilled.. The remainder is overlaid by farm buildings and a roadway. Published survey (25") correct (B5).
