Description

Plan Form - Rectangular.
Moat, adapted as mill leat (B9).
Visible on AP (B6).
NGR SP 94081650 to moat (B9).

There are three sides of a rectangular homestead moat at Ford End (B3).
A sub-rectangular homestead moat at Fort End measures overall 65.0 m E-W by some 160.0 m N-S. The southern arm and most of the E and W arms are waterfilled and in good condition and there is an outer retaining bank along most of the W side, but the construction of farm buildings in the last century necessitated the filling in of the N arm, the course of which can be still traced, and of part of the E arm. Ford End farmhouse is also of 19th c date. In the E 19th c, a now-disused corn mill was built at the N end of the W arm, and the moat, which is fed by a stream from the SW corner, was utilised as a mill-pond. Published survey (25") revised (B12).
