Description
A LABOURER DIGGING ON LEE COMMON FOUND A ROMAN IMAGE, THE FIGURE OF AN OLD MAN WITH ARMS EXTENDED. IT HAS A CROWN ON ITS HEAD ORNAMENTED WITH PEARLS. ITS VESTMENT IS INLAID WITH PURPLE. APPEARS TO BE OF COPPER & WASHED WITH GOLD . IT IS 8-10 INS LONG & WELL PROPORTIONED -
"There was lately (c 1795) found upon Lee Common (SP 9004)....by a labourer who was digging the ground, a Roman image.....It is the figure of an old man.....with arms extended. It has a crown upon is head ornamented with pearls, and its vestment is inlaid with purple. The composition of this image appears to be copper of considerable thickness, and washed with gold. It is about 8-10 inches in length and remarkably well proportioned". (B1).
