Description

A quantity of human and other bones, parts of the antlers of two stags, pottery and a corroded spearhead, were found by workmen about three feet below the surface, while draining a field called Benhill, just beyond the new cemetery and between the Tring and Wendover roads, in Walton hamlet. The spearhead, at least eighteen inches in length is considered by Smyth to be Danish. The pottery consisted of the neck of a terra cotta vessel painted black of Castor Ware and a fragment of what could have been the handle of a coarse amphora or urn (B2).

The VCH suggests that these remains are possibly Saxon. The "new cemetery" is presumably that shown on OS 6" at SP829 135 (B5). A number of other finds strengthens the possibility that a Roman and/or Pagan Saxon Cemetery existed in this area, by the side of Akeman Street. An iron spearhead was found in 1931 at SP82921333 and was in the possession of the Rev C N White (B10). A scramasax was found in 1921, near Tring Road and presented to the County Museum by Dr T G Parrott (B11) who also donated two A S spearheads in 1911. These were found in Dr Parrott's newly-acquired house and were thought to have come from the neighbourhood (B12).
