Description

POSSIBLE GROUP OF 4 RING DITCHES, BUT MORE PROBABLY FUNGUS RINGS, VISIBLE AS CROPMARKS ON AP (B1).
New interpretation - World War 2 searchlight battery (B3-4).

A searchlight battery site of World War II date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and levelled earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 600m north of Maid’s Moreton and centred at SP 70468 36308. Circular earthworks of the battery site and gun emplacements are visible as earthworks in 1946, with a generator house to the north close to the field boundary, constructed on top of medieval earthworks of ridge and furrow which are still visible on lidar visualisations. The searchlight earthworks have been levelled by 1967 but the generator house still appears to be present in 2020. (6-10)
