Description

'LARGE PIECE OF GROUND USED AS BRICKYARD'. SITE IDENTIFIED (AT NGR). TRADE PROBABLY NOT EXTENSIVE DUE TO POOR ACCESS. CANAL USED FOR TRANSPORTING BRICKS (B2).

A subrectangular extractive pit from probable post medieval brickmaking are visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located behind houses on the west side of Leighton Road in Stoke Hammond village and centred at SP 88080 29339, the extractive pit is likely a brickfield associated with a brickworks known from documentary sources to be located adjacent. The brickfield is about 59 metres N-S and 37 metres W-E. By 1947 the site had begun to be levelled as the land appears to be being developed or improved. By 1973, residential housing in Lodge Lane had been constructed on some of the site and by 1993 the extractive pit appears to have been filled in, with the construction of a lane and other vehicle trackways (3-6).
