SHAFT OF CHALK WELL: APPEARED AUG 1979 WHEN A WHEEL OF A COMBINE WENT DOWN INTO IT. ABOUT 8-10FT IN CIRCUMFERENCE; SPADE MARKS SHOWED AROUND SHAFT. IT IS QUITE CLOSE TO ESCARPMENT AT PAVIS WOOD. MR HUMPHREYS' FATHER (JENKINS LANE, ST LEONARDS) EARNED A LIVING DIGGING SHAFTS (PHOTO FILED)(B1)
