Description

'SALEM CHAPEL (CONGREGATIONAL)', 'BURIAL GROUND' AT NGR (B1).
INDEPENDENT CHAPEL BUILT BY R.WEBB 1726. IN 1838 IN DISREPAIR. NEW DESIGNS BY FENTON FOR NEW CHAPEL OPENED 1 JULY 1840 ON SITE BEHIND OLD CHAPEL (ILLUS)(B2).
RED BRICK WALLS. PEDIMENTED SE FRONT OF 3 BAYS. FURTHER DETAIL, ILLUS (B3).
Grade II. 1840. Designed by Fenton. Originally founded 1693. 2 storeys Greek Revival front of 3 bays. Yellow stock brick divided by shallow piers, with stone string at 1st floor cill level, stone cornice, and pediment with louvre battered at sides in tympanum. 2 tall windows in stone surrounds with pilasters and cornice in outer bays. Similar 3 light central window over double 6 panel door, rectangular fanlight in stone surround of pairs of Doric pilasters and entablature, approached by 6 stone steps (B4).
Built 1838-40 to the designs of James Fenton of Chelmsford for a church (now URC) formed in 1777 (more & photo)(B6)
