Description
'BURIAL GROUND'AT NGR (B1).
The detached burial ground is in Station Road. Reputedly a former saffron field, it was leased by the Quakers from 1663 and in use for burials since at least 1682. The last burial was in 1913. A plan showing the location of the burials is displayed in the current meeting house [CAS 1320905000]. In 1937 the burial ground was conveyed to the local authority and in 1944 14 headstones were moved to the town cemetery (there are now no remaining headstones). The high brick wall around the burial ground was demolished and the site became a car park, before being turned into a garden and public open space in 1985-6. In 2014 it was redesigned as a Peace Garden to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War (B2).
