Description

DURING SYSTEMATIC FIELDWALKING VARIOUS FINDS MADE. FIELD DIVIDED INTO 30M SQUARES. MATERIAL FROM EACH SQUARE PLOTTED SEPARATELY (FINDS:00:001-00:002). ALL FINDS WERE POST MEDIEVAL, INCL CLAY PIPE, ROOF TILE, GLASS AND ANIMAL BONE (SITE CODE AFS 08) (B1).
Geophysical survey carried out by Batlett-Clark Consultancy in October and November 2010 identified anomalies adjoining the E-W former lane in the northern part of the field, interpreted as rectangular property boundary ditches and suggesting that the hamlet of Burcott may once have extended along both sides of the lane. See report for detail (B2).
Postholes, pits, ditches, and a cobbled surface were identified within the northern half of Area B within Trench 3. The pottery dates these features to the 12th-14th century, although, a few sherd of St Neots ware suggest an earlier, late Saxon origin for this activity. Roman pottery was recovered fom the layer immediately below the cobbles (B3).
