Description

PLATFORM IN MOATED SITE MORE FOR DEFENCE THAN OCCUPATION. REMARKABLY SMALL CENTRAL ISLAND, ONLY 17 X 20 PACES BUT WIDE SURROUNDING MOAT, 60FT FROM LIP TO LIP (PLAN)(B1-2).
REMAINS VISIBLE ON APS AS CROPMARK BUT NOW COMPLETELY DESTROYED OR INFILLED. GROUND DISTURBANCE INDICATES ITS SITE (B3-4).
A square moat is visible on early vertical aerial photographs as earthworks. Channels connect to the eastern and western corners. Northern corner of central mound extends out into the moat. Levelled by the time of the 2012 LiDAR. A wide flat-bottomed channel, with slight banks on either side is visible just to the north-west of the moat. May have been connected/contemporary with the moat. Not shown on historic OS maps (B5).

A moat of medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and cropmarks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately 100m north of Brokk Farm, Stoke Mandeville, and centred at SP 482999 210288. The moat is subrectangular and measures approximately 39x37m with a clear central platform which measures approximately 31x25m; the ditches are 5-9m in width. The earthworks appear very clear in 1946 with water channels and an earthwork bank also visible. The latest photograph where these earthworks are still visible is 1961 and they have been almost levelled by 1967. Lidar visualisations show very low earthworks remain and the outline can be seen as soilmarks in 2018. This site is approximately 300m to the south east of another moated site along the same watercourse (see MBC1408). These earthworks fit in to the pattern of ridge and furrow field systems which surround the area. (8-
