Description

Dimensions - Length 0150 cm
Plan Form - LINEAR
FORMER METALLED ROAD OR TRACKWAY SHOWING AS A LINE OF LIMESTONE PEBBLES IN PLOUGHED FIELD N. OF OLD END, PADBURY, ON LINE OF FOOTPATH. (BIBL1)
Shown on 1591 estate map of Padbury (B2).

A trackway of medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and levelled earthworks and was/were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located between Old End and the course of the London Road, Padbury, and centred at SP 71545 30821. This road is visible between areas of ridge and furrow and is named on a 1591 map of the parish of Padbury. It is labelled as Averye Waye and ?Whites Crosse Waye and surrounds Averye Waye Furl in Hedge Fielde, with a later label of Backside on the map along the road that could have been the back lane of the settlement of Padbury. On the modern map it is visible as changes in field boundary and as a probable cropmark on Google Earth; Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 map shows a long narrow field and a footpath/trackway follows the route. Modern land use is mostly arable so earthworks have been levelled. The parish was inclosed in 1796 and the road was likely rerouted at the same time. (3-6)
