Monument record 0040900000 - 1.7 MILES W.OF WING CHURCH

Summary

Possible medieval moat recorded in field survey - This is a turf-covered earthen mound situated in a commanding position above natural slopes on the North and West sides. It is circa 30.0 m in diameter, and 4.0m high on the SE side, 6.0 m high on the North-West. The summit has been mutilated by digging, and a road encroaches on the South-East edge. The name, size, shape, reasonable defensive position, and its situation within Wing indicate a motte, though no ditch or outer bank can be seen around it. There is no certain evidence for a bailey, though a scarp, 0.6 m high, extending from the NE side of the mound could be the mutilated remains. The logical position for the bailey would have been on level ground to the SE of the mound, an area now occupied by housing.

Description

Dimensions - Width 9m,Length 35m.
Plan Form - L-shaped.
HOMESTEAD MOAT FRAGMENT. W PART TRACEABLE IN ADJOINING FIELD (B1).
L-SHAPED WATERFILLED DEPRESSION. EACH ARM IS C.35M LONG, 9M WIDE, UP TO 1.8M DEEP. NO EVIDENCE THAT ARMS CONTINUED TO FORM MOAT & NO TRACE OF FOUNDATIONS BUT APPEARANCE SUGGESTS A MOAT. ON A LOW HILL IN DENSE SCRUB ON OLD AIRFIELD (B2).

Remains of a medieval moat is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located adjacent the residence ‘Lockharts’ about 350 metres WSW of South Tinkers Hole Farm and centred at SP 85161 22701, a reverse L-shaped ditch up to 11 metres wide is 49 metres N-S and 47 metres E- W. Recorded on the 1880 dated 1st Edition OS map, in the mid-20th century the earthwork fell within the boundary of former wartime airfield RAF Wing in the west of its Technical Site. On recent remote sensing data, the moat remains extant within new woodland though the north end appears to have been infilled (3-5).

(SP 8517 2271) Moat (NR) (B6).

An L-shaped waterfilled depression situated in dense scrub and trees within a disused wartime airfield. The arms each measure about 35.0 m in length, about 9.0 m wide, and up to 1.8 m deep. There is no evidence on the ground to suggest that the arms continued to form a moated enclosure, and there is no trace of building foundations, though the dense vegetation prohibits detailed inspection. The general appearance of the remains does however suggest a probably homestead moat. No further documentary evidence. Published survey (25") revised (B7).
Topographically the moat is situated on a low hill with overall visibility, the partly enclosed island is on the same plane as the surrounding level. AM survey correct (B8).
