Description
OR STONORS CROFT. C14 HELD BY STONOR FAMILY. 1469 SOLD TO SIR RALPH VERNEY & OTHERS. MID C16 PASSED INTO POSESSION OF JOHN BOSSE. REMAINED WITH THEM UNTIL MID C17 WHEN UNITED WITH MANOR OF WAYNFORD & PASSED TO HOWSE FAMILY (B3).
(SP 8351 1511) Moat (NR) (B5).
A homestead moat and two fishponds, both of which are now dry (B4).
A rectangular spring fed part-waterfilled homestead moat situated on a gentle south-facing slope. It measures overall about 50.0m NE to SW by about 38.0m transversely, with arms 10.0m average width, and varying in depth from 2.8m on the higher north side to 1.0m at the lower south side. Material from the moat has been added to the central area to form a level platform, and a low non-surveyable outer retaining bank survives alongside the SW and SE arms. Some building debris of indeterminate type remains on the island, which is overgrown with trees. The NW arm is sculptured to create a garden rockery; later building debris has been dumped in the NE arm over the former causeway. There is no trace of any fishponds, but the farmer recalls filling in "depressions" to the south of the moat. An 'outflow' cannot now be traced. Re-surveyed at 1:2500 (B10).
No change to report of 19.10.73. AM survey correct (B11).
