LETTER FROM HENRY PUREFOY, OCT 1746: 'I SHALL LET DOWN MY FISH POND ON TUESDAY MORNING NEXT…'. ON TUESDAY 8 OCTOBER, HENRY WAS 'AT THE POND BANK ON FFISHING THE UPPER POND'; THE RECTOR ATTENDED & VARIOUS OTHERS, INCLUDING '2 LITTLE BOYS WHO STOOD BY THE UPPER POND'. ON 29 SEPT 1743 2 MEN RECEIVED 1 SHILLING 'FOR FISHING THE ROUNDABOUT POND' (B1).
THE PROBABLE SITE OF THESE FISHPONDS ARE THE 3 INTERLINKED PONDS KNOWN AS SHALSTONE PONDS. THEY HAVE BEEN CREATED BY THE DAMMING OF A STREAM AND ARE NOW [1979] NO MORE THAN VERY OVERGROWN, MUDDY HOLLOWS. SHALSTONE PONDS AT NGR, ALSO OTHER PONDS NEARBY AT SP6406 3626 & SP6439 3631 (B2).
