Description

Map of 1695 marks a windmill approx at NGR (B1).
Windmill Hill, on the drive leading from Angle Way to Notley Abbey. A likely site for the mill is at the summit where a small paddock exists (B2).
Mr H J Reynolds, whose family has farmed Notley for several generations, knows nothing of the possible existence of a windmill here, nor of the name 'Windmill Hill'. The site, certainly, is suitable - on the summit of a ridge. The existence of cropmarks nearby (see CAS 02207), probably a ring ditch and assocated features, could conceivably represent a ploughed-down mill mound. Since, however, the only evidence for the mill appears to be Seller's map, its actual existence must remain in doubt (B3).
(CASS 02207 = mill mound?).
