Description

AREA OF EARTHWORKS, PROBABLY MEDIEVAL SINCE RIDGE & FURROW RESPECTS IT. A NUMBER OF PROBABLE HOUSE PLATFORMS REPRESENTING THE SITE OF FORMER FARMSTEADS. NGR TO CENTRE OF EARTHWORKS (B1).

Boundaries of medieval/post medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs as extant cropmarks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 250m north east of Weatherhead Farm, Leckhampstead, and centred at SP 73694 37560. Earthworks of plot boundaries and possible building platforms are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs and cropmarks in an arable field on later aerial photographs. These form small croft boundaries in an area of very dispersed settlement in the parish of Leckhampstead. Some of these boundaries are shown on Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 mapping and show a house and garden with a well at the eastern end. Earthworks of plot boundaries and possible building platforms visible on aerial photos, modern land use is arable and lidar shows only slightly uneven ground. Settlement in this area was recorded as very dispersed in the Whittlewood Project. (3-7)
