Description

MUCH RB POT RECOVERED IN GARDEN OVER MANY YEARS LED TO EXCAVATION OF 3 AREAS. TOPSOIL REMOVAL EXPOSED AREA OF PACKED FLINTS: 'FLOOR' MAY REPRESENT YARD OR HARD STANDING FOR A WOODEN BUILDING. POTTERY & COIN EVIDENCE SUGGESTS C2 AD DATE (SEE FULL EXCAVATION REPORT; ALSO PLANS ETC FILED)(B1).


(SU 88989305) "A fairly compacted layer of flint on chalk" was found in April 1973 at a depth of 0.3m in the back garden of 67 Melbourne Road by Mr & Mrs Cauvain. This platform was later found to be 0.1m-0.25m thick and probably extends for about 40.0 square metres. On it were found a Roman "pot", three rims and body sherds and a dupondius of Trajan (identified by Ashmolean). These finds were retained by the Cauvains. (B3)

No further information; the Cauvains could not be contacted although they still live at the above address (B4).
