Description
The first reference to a Buckingham bell-founder is in 1552; a bell for Wing church was made here in 1556. Foundry owned by the Atton family in late C16? Closed in/by 1633. Part of bell canon found in yard, S side of West Street/Brackley Road; no other evidence of bell founding, so location of foundry site remains uncertain (B1).
NGR to West Street (B2).
A 8.5 cwt bell for Grendon Underwood church was cast in 1621 by Robert Atton (B3).
(SP6933. Bell foundry sited to Buckingham from authy.1 and OS 2500 1977.) A Tudor bell foundry in Buckingham belonged to the Appowells and
was not closed until 1633 (B4).
