Description

SALDEN WINDMILL IS REMEMBERED AS BEING OF BLACK OPEN POST TYPE WITH CROSS-TREES & V LARGE MAIN-POST (FURTHER DESCRIPTION). VERY PRONOUNCED ANNULAR MOUND WITH HOLLOW CENTRE, WITHIN A MILL PADDOCK, MARKS SITE (B4).
FIELD VISIT CONFIRMS SITE AT NGR; MILL PADDOCK LOCATED, BUT NO MILL MOUND SEEN (B5).

A post-medieval windmill mound is visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located on a field boundary about 896 metres NW of Manor Farm, Drayton Parslow and centred at SP 83002 28986, a slightly subcircular mound about 21 metres in diameter is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1944 on the field boundary. An arc of ditch about 1.3 metres wide bounds the mound between the E and SSW side. Extant and identified as ‘Salden Mill’ on the 1813 Ordnance Surveyor Drawing, the mill structure appears to have been demolished by 1881, leaving a small circular enclosure on the field boundary containing the mill mound, which was still visible on aerial photographs taken in 1944. On aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data, the features appear to have been levelled (6-10).
