Description
Small circular gasholder on artificial mound is all that remains of Wendover gasworks. Steel guides. Rivetted steel plate construction - 3 lifts. Dated c.1925. [1974 photo] (B1).
No visible remains of gasworks or gas holder in area of wasteland fringed by new housing (B2).
The Wendover Gas Light and Coke Co. Ltd was formed in 1868. The gasworks were built by the canal wharf and supplied and erected by W.C. Holmes & Co. of Huddersfield. In the 1920’s the undertaking was purchased by Aylesbury, a gas main was laid from Aylesbury to Wendover and the gas production at Wendover ceased. In 1949 the undertaking was vested in Southern Gas Board. Nothing visible survives (B3).
