Description
SHRINKAGE TO N, W & S OF CHURCH. SUNKEN ROAD BY SIDE OF PRESENT ONE (B1).
There are several areas of probable shrinkage in the vicinity of Buckland church. About 100m NE of church is a probable house platform at SP8887 1250, with other earthworks in the same field, which is under pasture. Adjacent field centred SP8880 1252, also under pasture, has a few amorphous earthworks, probably representing former house sites. The large field centred SP8875 1260 & under plough has a possible hollow way running diagonally SE/NW across it. Any other earthworks will probably have been ploughed flat. The small pasture field N of the former chapel has a good house platform at SP8870 1251 & other earthworks. Finally, the pasture field S of the village road centred SP8880 1230 has further amorphous earthworks, probably representing ploughed down house platforms (B2).
A shrunken settlement of medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located on the north side of Church Farm and to the west of Manor Farm, Buckland, and centred at SP 88794 12537. Linear banks and ditches of former boundaries and probable building platforms are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs in the 1940s. To the north of the church the earthworks appear to be more like field boundaries and this is supported by a 1592 map of the village. A small area of ridge and furrow earthworks are visible within this area as well as a subcircular mound, approximately 16x14m across, which is shown on the Epoch 1 Ordnance Survey map. There is no map or fieldname evidence available to show a mill on this site. The field was ploughed at some point before 1999 and these earthworks have been levelled but can be seen as cropmarks on the most recent aerial coverage on Google Earth. (6-11)
