Description

GENERAL DISCUSSION OF PENN TILEWORKS: CASS 2743:03 (B1).
TILE & POTTERY FOUND IN GARDEN BY OCCUPANTS & GIVEN TO BCM. TILE INCLUDES DECORATED FLOOR TYPES, PLAIN & UNGLAZED TYPES. 14 FRAGS DECORATED PENN TILE INCLUDING HOHLER TYPES P50, P67, P74, P125, P138, P145. 7 PIECES FLOOR TILE, BROWN GLAZED, YELLOW SLIPPED, OR YELLOW SLIPPED/COPPER STAINED, PLAIN RED (UNGLAZED). NO DEFINITE WASTERS. ALSO FOUND 3 SLIP TRAILED BOWL RIMS IN BRICKY FABRIC (PENN?) AND 3 BROWN GLAZED SHERDS AND A SPOUT. FOUND WITH EARLIER PENN FLOOR TILES (B2-3).
PROBABLY NOT A KILN SITE (B4).
STUDY OF CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF CERAMIC FROM SITE (B5).
Six designs of decorated floor tile wasters and plain black, brown and yellow tile fragments found whilst digging in the garden to the south side of the cottage close to the road and some 2 feet below ground. The pattern on two of the fragments is deeply recessed with the depressions showing little sign of slip (B6).
