Type and Period (1)

  • (Former Type) WATERMILL (First mentioned 1086, 11th Century - 1000 AD to 1099 AD)

Description

A MILL WORTH 10 SHILLINGS RECORDED ON KING'S MANOR AT BRILL IN DOMESDAY BOOK (1086) (B1).
BRILL TITHE MAP (1839) HAS A FIELD NAMED 'MILL BROOK LEYS' (CENTRE SP651121) (B2).
THE LITLE STREAM, FORMING THE W SIDE OF MILL BROOK LEYS COULD CONCEIVABLY HAVE TURNED THE WHEEL OF A SMALL WATERMILL. THERE IS NO OBVIOUS PLACE FOR A MILL ALONGSIDE THE STREAM, WHICH FALLS GRADUALLY FROM THE BRILL HILLS TO THE B4011 ROAD, BUT A FLATTISH AREA ADJACENT TO THE ROAD & BRIDGE COULD BE THE SITE. THERE ARE OBVIOUSLY FEW SITES FOR A WATERMILL IN BRILL PARISH, SO THAT THIS ONE SHOULD BE REGARDED AS A DISTINCT POSSIBILITY (B3).
