Description

OS 1880/85 MARKS BRICKFIELD & 2 LIMEKILNS IN AREA CENTRED AT NGR (B2).
DIRECTORIES RECORD 'BRICKMAKER & LIMEBURNER', 'BRICK & TILEMAKER', 'BRICK & TILE MERCHANT' & 'BRICKMAKER' C.1830-87 (B1).
NO VISIBLE REMAINS EXIST OF BRICKFIELDS OR LIMEKILN IN GROUND NOW USED AS ALLOTMENTS (1982) (B3).
Negative evaluation at 28 Mitre Street concluded that over 2m of Victorian make-up layers probably represented backfilling of the marl pit shown on 1881 1:500 OS map. It seems likely that the marl pit may have extended to the street frontage, effectively destroying any medieval remains (B4).
