Description

Salden estate map of 1599 field marked as 'Mill Hoo' at approx NGR (B1).
In C16 a watermill & a malting mill are referred to. Now no trace of the mill in Winslow (B2).
Traditional site of Abbot's watermill (B3).
Nothin visible. Site is at confluence of 2 slow-moving streams with steep banks bordered by well-cultivated fields (B4).
Said locally to be site of old ford which carried original route from Winslow to Granborough. Was abandoned by most traffic in favour of bridged crossing upstream by C16. Oral evidence that ford still used in summer within past century (B3).
An article tracing the 10th century boundary of the Manor of Winslow notes that the Salden estate map shows this area to be called Mill Hook, signifying the likely location of a watermill in 1599 (B5).
Historical notes (B6).
