Description

Finds of Romano-British pottery worn out of the bank of Pyrtle Spring, Culverton Farm (SP 81030246) led to two trial trenches being dug, in a northernly direction from the spring, in 1932 under the supervision of F N Pryce, FSA. Most of the finds occurred immediately above the water and included Samian Ware, scored flue tiles, Mortaria, brown and black ware and iron slag. These are now in Bucks Co Museum. No trace of a building was found but the indications of a permanent site in the area are there, and the pottery indicates an occupation lasting from the early second to the fourth century. (Nothing apparent on available RAF APs) RESULT OF POTTERY FINDS WORN OUT OF BANK: 2 TRIAL TRENCHES DUG SPRING 1932 UNDER DIRECTION OF F N PRYCE. NO TRACE OF BUILDING FOUND THOUGH STRUCTURAL FINDS INDICATE PERMANENT BUILDING IN THE VICINITY. POTTERY SUGGESTS OCCUPATION FROM EARLY C2 TO C4 (B1).

About 1950, F H Pavry made surface finds of tegulae (2 fragments), samian, colour-coated and mortaria sherds, near Pyrtle Spring in area SP 81100245. The sherds were mainly 3-4th century. Acc No 39.73. (B7).
Pyrtle Spring lies in the bottom of a valley, and no trace of Roman occupation was found here or in the surrounding area of pasture and plough. The Lindsay Scott finds were not located in Bucks Co Museum (B8).
